Extra pay ruling limits farmers’ options

Earlier this month, the Washington State Supreme Court ruled that farmworkers paid piece rate for their work must also receive wages for additional tasks during the work day. Madi Clark, Agriculture Policy Research Director at the Washington Policy Center (WPC), wrote in a recent post that the decision will prompt farmers to transition to using machines, as there are less risks and costs.

“These policy changes by the court unduly limit payment options … that allow farmworkers to set their own profit goals and rewards efficiency,” wrote Clark.
