Amazon’s wage increase and the retail sector

The News Tribune reports that although Amazon has announced it will be increasing its minimum wage for workers across the U.S. to $15 per hour beginning Nov. 1, the move will likely put pressure on retailers who don’t charge a membership to take on increased costs by following suit. Amazon is likely planning for the long run—most of its coding, programming, managerial and technical jobs pay more than $15 per hour already, and the company is continuing to embrace automation to replace some of the lower paying work.
